Discovery Camp
Where: Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont

Discovery Camp is full of firsts for many kids. It’s a place to explore nature while getting down and dirty with the forests, rivers, and critters that make these mountains home. Search for salamanders, collect insects, experience the awesome power of a waterfall, hike through wilderness, cool off in the swimming hole, and laugh with your new friends around the campfire. All Discovery campers become Jr. Rangers through the National Park Service to boot! This is the place where you will discover just how exciting nature can be at a summer camp like no other. Camp lasts Monday afternoon to Saturday morning. Cost: $523. Ages 9-12.

Girls in Science
Where: Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont

Who says girls don’t like things that creep and crawl? Join a group of other intrepid girls for the adventure of a lifetime. Get up close and personal with critters, plants, and the forces that shape our natural world as you join scientists in conducting hands-on science in the park. Study butterflies, explore rushing streams, and search for the hidden and unknown in your quest to REALLY know Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Created for rising 8th grade girls, Girls in Science is unlike anything you have ever done and will create memories that last a lifetime. Cost: Thanks to a generous grant from Toyota through Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, we offer this experience to qualifying rising 8th grade girls for a $50 non-refundable registration fee. Smoky Mountain Science Teacher Institute
Where: Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont

Immerse yourself for one week in the biological diversity of the Smokies and return home with exciting new ideas for involving your students in hands-on science. Visit diverse Smokies habitats to learn about their amazing natural resources and the environmental problems threatening them. Become a citizen scientist helping to inventory and monitor everything from salamanders to slime molds. Increase your own science skills and discover new ways to do the same for your students! Tremont produces this workshop in collaboration with the National Park Service (NPS) and Discover Life in America. Your instructors will include Tremont staff, NPS educators and scientists, and other scientists involved in research in the park. Program lasts from Monday supper through Saturday lunch. Cost: $587. However, we are offering this workshop to teachers for a $50 non-refundable registration fee. Contact us for details.

Backcountry Ecological Expeditions

Our Backcountry Ecological Expedition explores the wild side of the Smokies. We will canoe to a backcountry site to set up field experiments in support of the All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, an ambitious project that is attempting to document all of the estimated 100,000 species found in the Smokies. Butterflies, beetles, birds, and botany are just a few of the subjects of our investigations as we explore the creeks and hollows in search of the next organism new to the park or even to science! Cost: $583. Ages 13-17. Space is limited so register today!

Wilderness Adventure Trek

Spend a week away from parents? Sure! But spend it among black bears, towering trees, rattlesnakes, and Barred Owls while backpacking on steep mountain trails? Oh, yeah! Come to feel at home in the wilderness. Sleep in the woods, swim in a mountain stream, kick back around the campfire, and make valuable new friends. Climb a mountain carrying everything you need to survive for four days and three nights on your back—all under your own power. Learn the skills necessary for planning and enjoying a safe, successful backpacking trip. Put your new skills into practice, experience a true wilderness, and make friends to last a lifetime. Camp lasts from Monday afternoon to Saturday morning. Cost: $572. Ages 13-17.
